McGowan is a professional member of Visual Arts Scotland and part-time lecturer in drawing at Edinburgh College of Art. Commissioned work has appeared in The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraphy, The Independent, Scotland on Sunday, The Herald and on book Jackets for Ben Okri, Edwin Morgan and Angela Huth, amongst others.
McGowan has lectured in drawing, printmaking and illustration at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle upon Tyne from 1991 to 1999. He has also been a visiting lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Hull School of Art and Design.
