Overview

Beth Robertson Fiddes’ landscapes are cinematic, in widescreen, and with a brilliant soundtrack. They take you to rarely seen moments and places in the sublime northwest of Scotland, places which Robertson Fiddes seeks out, and studies, while always experimenting with her incredible lexicon of techniques. The more you look at these paintings, the more they reveal, and the more you marvel at how they are achieved.

There is a narrative in all six paintings, and light is always an actor. It might be the glow of an obscured sun that lights a passage through a cleft in the rocks, or a red and blue hued foreground that urges the viewer towards distant, distant hills, or it could be a back-light which animates a wave, allowing us to see its vitality. In ‘Shifting Veil,’ the wave (and the sea) moves, almost possessed by a soul. The landscape in Beth Robertson Fiddes’ work is very alive indeed and it is a thrill to join her in it.
