Maggie New (b. 1959) brings natural forces, the passage of time and her own experience into play in her elemental paintings. Grounded in abstraction, New’s bold forms and highly nuanced use of colour capture hidden aspects of being in the landscape.

'Painting for me is a contemplative activity, drawing connections between what is seen and unseen. Marks and colour are often used intuitively to express my experience of the world. Forms appear as a definite presence, as well as a clue or symbol of something that is otherwise hidden or intangible. The paintings are derived in part from landscape, although they are not descriptive of any particular place or time, rather a space into which I project a more inward-looking experience. My interest in the elemental nature of the world is explored through light, energy, source, transience and change. The drama of the Scottish weather, the ancient landscapes, rolling seas and ever-changing light are what most inspire me.'
