Night Seas, Auchmithie, East Coast Scotland - oil on canvas

Featured on BBC Landward March 2008 - click to see Nael Hanna interview

Its over 20 years since Nael Hanna left his native Iraq on an art scholarship to Britain. In 1987 he attended Duncan of Jordonstone College of Art in Dundee and has since then risen to some prominence within the Scottish art scene. His abstract seascapes have a surging power and a rhythm that make them instantly recognisable but still within a Scottish School of painting. His still-lives and more abstract work retain this great ability with paint. Hanna's work is in major private and public collections worldwide.

"I am inspired by water, sound and nature, being fascinated by the changing colours and shapes reflected in the sea, land and sky. I enjoy looking for the rhythms created by nature and by the force of natural elements. I have spent a great deal of time studying the coastal landscape around my home, and however much at times I feel that I should escape from this recurring subject, I am always willingly drawn back by its sheer beauty and magnetism".
