Peter White looks within himself for concepts whose presence have been sensed but whose description, form and boundaries are yet to be articulated, he avoids presuppositions and strives towards a fresh recognition. Using painting as a means to explore the world and his relationship to it, his discoveries enable him to comprehend his own position and help him to build a spiritual connection with existence. He does not do this solely for his own nourishment, when he Recognizes a painting as being successful he hopes that such a work can transmit these values and facilitate understanding; he nonetheless believes that you cannot "step outside yourself in order to tell another something," that clarity and personal integrity are paramount.
The process of painting takes time. White makes a physical record for the duration of each work stage so that the textured, distressed surfaces have a geological context within which images can exist. He describes the stepping stones on his journey in order to chronicle his traveling; ultimately to arrive at a point of "stillness and vibrancy." He creates paintings that have a questioning ambiguity, whose light is both internal and external and whose structure has evolved to a perfect tension. By giving his viewer an honest starting point where every aspect has been weighed and balanced, he enables them to embark on a voyage of discovery that parallels the painter’s own.
