Norman Shaw

Norman Shaw was born on Lewis, close by the Stones of Callanish, and surrounded by the sights, sounds and feelings of Gaeldom. This is the deepest vein in his paintings and drawings (and music and writing,) which describe a mythological version of the landscape, a world that is within us as much as it is outside us.

Shaw's latest works are small paintings - jewel-like and thick with oil. They give the land a bodily quality which makes mountains, river and trees into living things. In Shaw's paintings, you feel the land has consciousness and limbs to you on a quest.
