Br. DANIEL MORPHY: introducing the work of Br. Daniel Morphy
One of the most exciting releases this year must be the introduction of Brother Daniel Morphy’s work to the gallery and to the Scottish art world. Brother Morphy (b 1957) entered Pluscarden Abbey shortly after graduating from Camberwell Collage of Art in the 1990s and, while living in the confines of Abbey life, he has never stopped his exploration of contemporary art (and icon painting.) Here are six paintings that combine Morphy’s esoteric spirit world, with human frailties and a delightful sense of humour.
There is a long-held quest in all six works: Seed (A Green Place) is inspired by Acteon and is a painting of transformation; A Spirit Approaches shows an angel in the grounds of Pluscarden; The Secret Place speaks for itself - endless, formless, replenishing and eternal; The Threshing Floor was inspired by an episode in the Second Book of Samuel chapter 24; Quaerens, illustrates a quester like Morphy himself; and City is Morphy’s birth place, London.
