Birds & Bards: New work by Wendy Sutherland
‘The Stories handed down from ancient Scottish bards became a light dusting of snow over the canvas that, when thawed, left behind an impression or attribute of each bird I focused on. Bird fables help us puzzle out this life. Their gentleness, courage, transformation, death, dreams and renewal provide an invisible sharing that goes one step beyond the birds’ beauty or the play and purpose of their songs.’

We are excited to share with you Birds & Bards, an exhibition of sixteen new paintings by Wendy Sutherland. In this exhibition, Sutherland explores the world through our ancestors, eagles, owls, wrens and the stories they tell. Each bird has its own pattern and an individual way of being in the world. These works explore this relationship, using intuition, paints and inks, reopening the bardic songbook.
Grounded in the natural world and the knowledge of our ancestors, Birds & Bards is a reawakens how we see landscape and our place within it.
Wendy Sutherland (b.1975) graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1997. Sutherland is a unique voice in Scottish Landscape painting and an award-winning artist, bringing an ecstatic quality of wonder and reverence for all that is held in the landscape. Represented in collections worldwide, Sutherland lives and works in Brora, Northern Scotland.
This exhibition runs from the 20th March until the 18th April and we have published a catalogue to celebrate the event, available from the gallery and online.
