Living in the Clock | ROBERT POWELL
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but there is a library of words in every Robert Powell etching and a saga that emerges from every image. They are intentionally boundless - capturing a world of boundless follies and wonders - for we are all, as Powell comments, living in the clock and this is what he captures so well.
Robert Powell's work gives the viewer a giddy feeling of the infinity: a cacophony of people buried deep in structures, machines and buildings that mean everything to the maker, but less out of context; he conjures distant cultures and what can be viewed from our own revolving sphere; and he explores the body and its adornments. Powell's work is a library of folly and survival and, because of that, it is infinitely human. This series of works brings one more element to Powell’s colossal library – time, with its ticking machines that soundtrack the circles of birth and death.
Most of the work in this exhibition consists of small etchings that mark moments from the clock that we live in. They are memories transcribed by an incredible chronologically chronicler.
