Last Friday, Beth Robertson Fiddes explained to a collector the how she rarely uses photos as a source for her landscape paintings but prefers short films. This explains how there is so much movement in her work. A wave does not exist for an instant but rolls for a while - possibly rising high with cathedral-like light shining through - before it morphs into a new form and another follows. Robertson Fiddes catches these filmic time elements in all her paintings. Maybe this is what makes an artwork successful – time as well as colour and form. Her exhibition is showing until 29th May.
We have many more wonderful things in the gallery - in the vestry, upstairs and in our vaults. These show the strength and importance of what goes on outside urban centres and our collections pages are an easy way to explore this.
